Developing Sustaining and Financing Youth Media Programs
The People's Channel(TPC)in Chapel Hill, NC is an access center geared toward engaging youth (ages 12 - 17) in media.
Provide training and equipment. Students take a field production course and participate in Summer Youth Production Camp.
Funding: consider private scholarships, offer sweat equity, consider school credit. They broker resources and relationships between schools, community and after-school programs. High Schools, charter schools and youth media organizaitons can partner with access centers. Establish policies that support access with supervision but not control over products.
Teaching young people how to discern entertainment from advertising.
Inspire young people to express themselves beyond the short You Tube clip with messages they want to share.
Access centers are invaluable resources that play a key role in developing young people as effective leaders, engaged citizens, and social change agents.
Use partnerships with Arts Councils, schools and service groups to build programs.

Open application process, interview by staff and two senior students
Release, supervisory issues? Supervisors have police clearance (similar to coaching requirements). Releases on file. Organizations provide chaperones.
In devleoping partnerships for youth productions, define the outcome first with partner and monitor and establish parameters. Important fine line not to offend financial suppporter with inappropriate language etc.
Meet youth where they already are - Facebook, Myspace etc. Casting call to participants in studio porduciton. Come with parent if under 18 to make teen show.
Ideas to implement
Summer camp. Under the umbrella of another org like Park and Rec, SAC, COS, we provide facilities and training. Get clearance for individuals to work wtht kids. Establish fees and support from community/service groups to supplment costs for kids.
