Volunteer Training Syllabus for MCTV 15
It is proposed that MCTV 15 undertake a monthly 4 –part training course for volunteers in order to increase community participation and educate the public.
Training will be given on the first four Monday evenings of each month from 6pm to 9pm. It will consist of a brief overview of each of the progressively more involved stages of television production at MCTV 15.
Orientation will be open to any class size. Other classes with be on a signup basis with a minimal fee and class size will be limited according to our capacity appropriate to each subject.
Field production will be a separate class for producers after they have demonstrated volunteer participation.
Class Breakdown
Studio Production
- Orientation and Studio Production- Mission, PEG, structure and policies, introduction to Studio Production concepts.
- Studio Production- hands-on training in each of the jobs for producing a show in the studio.
Producing Your Own Show
- Pre-Production, planning, storyboarding and setting up a shoot. Casting and crew. Introduction to video editing w/ Vegas 4.0
- Video editing on Vegas 4.0
Field Production
Translating production concepts to the field. Handling unique situations that arise in field production such as audio and lighting.

Orientation and Introduction to Studio Production
- Mission Statement- who we are, what is our relationship to the community as a public access TV station.
- PEG- government FCC regulations for public access stations, a brief history of MCTV 15. Legal responsibility of producers.
- Funding and Donations- Access and production fees, encouraging donations, cost of operating MCTV 15.
- Forms and procedures- Scheduling, volunteer participation.
- Station tour- introduction to Staff, equipment and website.
- Intro to Studio Production- tape, camcorder technique and lighting, microphones and audio. Camera angles and talent instruction.
- Question and Answer Session
Studio Production
Instruction and hands-on experience in each of the following crew positions.
- Director preparation meeting w/ producer, calling shots, anticipation, jargon, communication w/ crew.
- Technical Director switching and color balance, video eqpt setup, lighting and scene composition.
- Floor Director liaison between director and talent, show timing and cues.
- Camera Person operation of both studio cameras, understanding direction.
- Audio Director microphone setup and audio leveling, audio monitoring and switching.
