Siskiyou Media Council is the county-wide charitable 501(c)(3) non-profit organization continuing to build on the foundation laid by the dedicated folks who started MCTV 15.
We are serious about the idea that the health and well-being of a community depends in part on communication among its residents, and proud to be moving into a central role in our community’s communication network. Our services and outreach are expanding – it’s an exciting time! As you can tell from the “synopsis” below, however, many of Siskiyou Media Council’s efforts extend well beyond public access television management and operation. This means that most of our current services require both operational and project-specific funding not covered by public access contract revenue.
In other words, we need your help.
We invite you to get serious right along with us about the idea that “the health and well-being of a community depends in part on communication among its residents.” We ask you to become a supporting donor now during our 2012 Winter Fund Drive, so that Siskiyou Media Council can continue to provide you with the information services that will help our county community thrive.
Thank you!
Synopsis of Siskiyou Media Council’s work in our community:
• Manages and operates both MCTV 15 in south Siskiyou County and YCTV 4 in Yreka, ensuring live broadcast and subsequent re-broadcasts of local government meetings;
• Keeps the MCTV 15 television studio doors open for television production by local citizens, and plans to re-vitalize a YCTV 4 interview production studio in Yreka;
• Broadcasts over the cable television system and streams content simultaneously on the Internet on our website www.mctv15.org via an industry-standard media server;
• Airs documentaries, shows for children and for seniors, COS student projects, UCTV, and Democracy Now! in addition to shows produced locally in our studio;
• Brings local high school students into the production studio, an outreach that will produce Weed High School’s twice-monthly news show beginning in February;
• Maintains the Siskiyou Community Bulletin Board, which displays community announcements regularly on MCTV 15 and continuously on our website;
• Serves as Siskiyou County’s partner in the county’s first and only Internet-based emergency warning and alert system via our electronic WEBUS technology; and
• Helps local non-profits “get the word out” about their services through low-cost memberships that provide access to our facilities and discounted media services.

Local television is alive and well at the MCTV 15 studios in Weed, with new local shows on the air, in production, and on the drawing board. But just to liven things up, Channel 15 is also airing new locally-sponsored shows submitted from outside our area
“Drawing with Mark” features artist Mark Marderosian and his animated “angels in the attic.” From his whimsical attic gallery, the artist offers step-by-step drawing lessons with different subject themes to “kids” of all ages. “Drawing With Mark” is aired on Mondays and Thursdays at 4 and 4:30 pm and on Saturday mornings at 8 and 8:30 am. Children, parents, and elementary school teachers are particularly encouraged to check this one out!
The hour-long documentary “Information Stories” gives voice to people from around the country with stories to tell about the importance of information to community citizens. “Information Stories” will air the last two weeks of every month for the rest of the year on Mondays at 8 am, Wednesdays at 7 pm, and Saturdays at 11 pm. Individual excerpts from this collection will air as well, at various times throughout each month.
“My Longevity Secrets” is an interview-format show produced by a group of entertaining and enterprising seniors in southern California. Their initial effort is airing now, and they plan to send one new show every month up to Siskiyou County. Broadcast times are Wednesdays at 4:30 pm and Saturdays at 6:30 pm.
Arthur Aday’s ongoing series, “Aday in Telos,” can be viewed on Tuesdays from 8 – 9 am and on Fridays from 6 – 7 pm.
Our twice-daily broadcast of UCTV, at 9 am and again at 1 pm, offers a wide range of lectures, interviews, and performances. “Democracy Now” can be seen weeknights at 9pm.
The new electronic Siskiyou Community Bulletin Board airs from 6 – 7 am, from 12 – 1 pm, and from 5 – 6 pm every day on Channel 15 and streams continuously at mctv15.org under the tab labeled Bulletin.” MCTV 15 programming can be viewed in the south county on Northland Communications cable channel 15 and on the Internet at mctv15.org. Press Release New Media Server
May 12, 2011
Siskiyou Media Council announced this week the imminent unveiling of a new electronic Community Bulletin Board system for the MCTV 15 website and cable television channel. An SMC non-profit membership drive is currently underway in order to allow those interested to take advantage of the new service as quickly as possible and receive additional membership benefits.
The new CBB protocols will allow staff members of non-profits, schools, religious organizations, and government agencies to upload announcements and event details at any time. All information posted will be available 24/7 as it scrolls continuously on the website mctv15.org, and also will be broadcast regularly on MCTV cable channel 15.
SMC Executive Director Deborra Brannon called the new CBB system an “unprecedented opportunity for communication and information sharing in Siskiyou County. “Our non-profit memberships include many advantages for the organizations with whom we work, but password access to this new Community Bulletin Board system will be a central membership feature from now on. Participants will be able to get the word out about their events and services through a central bulletin board accessible to everyone with Internet access in Siskiyou County. And we will provide links directly to the CBB from non-profit member websites, upon request,” Brannon said.
She noted that Siskiyou Media Council membership is not required to obtain password access and posting privileges to the new bulletin board. Beginning later this spring, all interested and eligible non-members may apply for password access to the new service.
Brannon explained, however, that SMC membership provides significant cost savings for those interested in services offered in addition to the password access. Non-profit members are invited to produce free of charge a 30-second Public Service Announcement video at the MCTV 15 studios on June 17th, to be broadcast on channel 15 throughout the year, and are entitled to limited free studio and equipment rental.
Siskiyou Media Council began raising funds for the new media server system in October 2010. The server has been purchased and installed, and staff training on the new system is underway. All features and services associated with the new server, including the new electronic CBB, should be up and running by May 15th.
“There’s a learning curve involved for SMC staff and I’m sure there will be some bugs to work out along the way, but the new system should be well worth the effort. I ask that the community be patient as we switch over from our current system.” Brannon said.
Information about other new system features will be announced toward the end of the month, she added.
Contact Brannon at dbrannon@siskiyoumediacouncil.org for more information about SMC non-profit membership packages and password access to the new electronic Community Bulletin Board.
